The Unwritten Rule   Short'n'quick           October 1, 2000

Thou shalt not be friends with your ex

by Krissy Smith

Email to a Friendand so you have coffee with your ex and he talks about his new girlfriend and you think to yourself, 'Why is he telling me this? I don't want to hear about her,' and then you remember that you have told him about your new friend, okay, okay, your new boyfriend and that he has politely listened while you rambled on and on so you try to sound happy for him but deep down you're hurt because he has found someone new, another woman, someone who cares about him like he cared about you and you wonder why you're jealous when you don't like him and you shudder at the disgusting way he has of clearing his throat but still he's your ex and so you want him to be happy but why can't he be happy with someone less pretty, less thin, less smart...? why...? and you consider this while he blah, blah, blahs about this woman until you resolve that there is an Unwritten Rule that says that thou shalt not be friends with your ex, even if it seems like a good idea at the time, and even if you claim you are not jealous, and even if you have another boyfriend... because if you are, then one day you will realize that he is over you, that he has moved on, and that someone else has taken your place, and she might be sweet or she might be mean or she might insist that he not be friends with you anymore and he might leave your life for good... but this way you will hurt because it will be his choice and not yours.
