F. Michael Wells grew up in rural Indiana and describes himself as a "nature mystic" due to the profound, 'mystical' states nature has aroused in him since childhood. He began painting seriously as a teenager and later studied at the Institute of Design of the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. He has lived in the San Franciso Bay Area since 1974.
For Michael, the purpose of "art" is not so much to create an object, but to learn to "see". Michael's years of painting and metaphysical study have brought him to a new, yet ancient, way of seeing the world as an embodiment and expression of the "cosmic soul".
Michael's paintings are abstract yet eclectic within that genre. He is in love with paint and what paint can do--refusing to pursue only one style or technique. His "Light Modulators" use light reflecting off a brush-textured paint surface to create a sense of movement and form in space. His "Crossings" series weave light, color and form into fields of vibrant, undulating tension. His "Mixed Media" series explore the expressionistic qualities of "raw" paint.
Michael's work has been exhibited at the Oakland Museum and included on Studio Tours offered by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. He is represented by the Osceola Gallery in Emeryville, California and has work in numerous private and corporate collections in the Bay Area, Chicago, Canada and Germany.
More examples of his work can be found on his web site.
