Pamela Arent

Four years ago I read the book "Wherever You Go, There You Are" by Jon Kabat-Zinn. It is a wonderfully simple and charming book that explores the Buddhist concept of "mindfulness" - the art of living fully in the moment in order to achieve inner peace. I highly recommend it to anyone who has forgotten to slow down and enjoy the little things in life.

My art is an expression of my mindfulness.

When I paint I try to capture my thoughts and energy onto the canvas. My intent is to have the pieces feel alive to the viewer - regardless of the subject matter. I mainly paint images from my imagination, memory and dreams. I like to apply the paint in thick layers making interesting textures that interact with the colors and lines of the images. Recently I have started adding "found" objects (a broken ski, a horseshoe, buttons, acorns) to the canvas that cross my path throughout the day. This blending of the physical and imaginary worlds reflects my belief that all objects and experiences have meaning. It is how we choose to interpret them that decide their relevance.

I was born and raised in Minnesota and graduated from Carleton College with a degree in biology. I moved to San Francisco in 1992 during the recession and entered the corporate job market. For eight years I worked long hours and painted in the wee hours of the night. After much encouragement from fellow artists and friends I began exhibiting my work publicly and dedicating more and more time to my art. Several of my pieces are held in private collections in the Bay Area.

I am currently taking a hiatus in upstate New York to enjoy some quiet reflection, watch the seasons change, and dedicate my energies to painting and other creative outlets.
